SOUTH Eastern Sydney Illawarra Area Health is looking for a new boss after chief executive Debora Picone was made director-general of NSW Health.

One of Professor Picone's first tasks, when she takes up the state health system's top job on Monday, will be to find her replacement.

A spokesman for NSW Health said the position would be advertised nationally "as soon as possible".

Director of clinical operations Matthew Daly will act as chief executive in the interim.

Prof Picone was the first chief executive of the merged area health service, moving into the position in November 2004, six weeks before the merger on January 1, 2005.

She has faced accusations that the South Coast had been given a raw deal compared with hospitals in the northern end of the service.

Prof Picone replaces Acting Director-General Robert McGregor.
